Sacred Heart School is located in Sioux Lookout, Northwestern Ontario, Canada. The School was built in l994 and houses approximately 397 students and 36 staff. Our facility serves students from grade Junior Kindergarten to grade 8. A municipally run day care, Biidaabin, is housed at one end of the facility making the transfer of our half day kindergarten students both safe and convenient.
Formerly, we were part of the Dryden District Roman Catholic District School Board, however, in 1998 we amalgamated with sister schools in Dryden and Fort Frances to become known as the Northwest Catholic District School Board. In 2009 we welcomed St. Patrick School in Atikokan to our Board. Our School Board motto is “Schools of Hope”.
We are a technologically advanced facility. All classrooms will have Smart Boards this fall and last year all teachers received training on the use of Smart Boards. As well, all of our classrooms are connected to the school network and can access the Internet. Our library operates on the L4U online system. Computer skills are taught in each classroom using wireless labs. Sixty-four laptops are housed in trolleys that are accessible to all class rooms. Teachers receive in-service training and are responsible for implementing programs that incorporate the technology component of the Ontario Curriculum. The Northwest Catholic District School Board has also adopted an Information and Communications Technology curriculum. You can visit our website at http://sacredheart.tncdsb.on.ca.
School priorities over the past few years have included a focus on Catholicity, improving student achievement, anti-bullying (includes cyberbullying), conflict resolution, Safe Schools, character education, curriculum implementation and Healthy Snacks/Healthy Living. Native as a Second Language has been successfully implemented in grades 1 to 4. This year, the Native as a Second Language program has been extended to include students from grade 6, if they choose this elective. French as a Second Language continues to be offered to all students in grades 4 to 8.
School Council priorities over the past few years have included parental involvement, the nutrition program, fund raising for playground equipment, advising on calendars, student achievement initiatives, Board policies and ensuring good relationships between church, school and home. Funding proposals for nutrition programs and parental involvement will be submitted this year.
The staff at Sacred Heart have valued and supported a variety of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities over the years such as the Youth Group, team sports, chess, the grade 8 Toronto Trip, conflict resolution, Peace Patrollers, the Holy Childhood, Social Justice initiatives, the Intergenerational Program and homework clubs.
We will once again look forward to taking advantage of the "Balanced Day" and using a data-based approach involving critical pathways to improve student achievement. Also, complementing the oral language program and extending differentiated instruction with the support of ‘Student Work Study Teacher’ will help students to continue to advance.
Sacred Heart School enjoys a healthy, co-operative partnership with the School Council as we all strive to achieve our common goals. Parents are very much a part of the cultural fabric of our school tapestry. Together we are a Catholic community of life long learners who work to build and ultimately fulfill our mission statement and our belief statements.
